No thanks to United/Continental Airlines, I have finally made it to New Orleans for the American Library Association's Annual Conference. (The only good thing about the flight was the fact that "Beastly" was the in-flight movie). After arriving at 4:30am local time this morning, thanks to extensive delays, I am ready to report on all the geeky librarian fun I will be having...stay tuned!
Today started with SLEEPING IN, and then a magical discovery that my hotel's pool was on the roof. Reading in the glorious sunshine was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. (I am still trying to finish up the last of the BFYA books that I brought with me). 90 degrees feels wonderful to someone stuck in the horrible Seattle "spring" that we've had.
Tonight I am off to two publisher events, with the opportunity to meet wonderful authors and eat yummy food. Will post details later...
Are you in NOLA? What are you most excited for this weekend?

Do Not Open Until...part 2
Last Thursday, 9/30/10, the mailman came to the door to deliver a package that would not fit in the mailbox. Across the package was a LARGE sticker stating, "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 10/5/10." When the postman handed the package to my son, who had answered the door, said mailman made sure to mention that we were not to open the package until the 5th. And this is the warning that my son passed along to me when he handed me the package.
And then I laughed at the child. (Okay, so maybe I'm not the nicest mom sometimes). Seriously? Can the postman really tell me not to open the package? I knew what it was...a book. And I'm sorry, but there is NO way you are keeping me from finding out which book it is. (See the first post on this topic from a few weeks ago).
So, what was the book? If you noticed the book cover attached to this post, then you already know..."Behemoth" by Scott Westerfeld. YEAH! This is the sequel to "Leviathan" and is not officially released until the 5th, hence the need for the warning label.
By the way, I think I've traumatized my son by ripping open the package with complete disregard for the official warning from the postman. I still think that the mailman was being funny and my son didn't pick up on the sarcasm. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Did you read "Leviathan?" Are you excited for "Behemoth?"

Do not open until...

On Friday (9/17), I returned home from school to discover two big boxes on my front porch. This was quite exciting! Typically I receive large envelopes containing one or two books every day. But there are days when one box arrives, and this makes for a happy day. Days when two boxes arrive??? PARTY!!!
So, there were two funny things about these boxes:
(1) Each LARGE box only contained one book! (And obviously huge amounts of packing materials). I am wondering if these publishers understand the concept of wasting resources? Recycling? Killing trees? Wasting money on postage?
(2) One of the boxes had a giant sticker extolling, "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 9/21/10!" Yeah, right! That's pretty funny. I am sure that this directive was only meant for bookstores, and it was easier to label all the boxes rather than pick and choose, but it made me laugh. And wonder if the book police were going to come arrest me for opening the box before 9/21.
And yes, I did open the box, almost immediately! Inside was "The Search for WondLa," the latest book by "Spiderwick Chronicles" author Tony DiTerlizzi. YEAH! I am very excited to read this, as I am a huge fan of the Spiderwick Chronicles series. And just in case the book explodes if I read it before 9/21, I will wait until after then to read it.
Want to read it next? Leave a message in the "comments" section and let me know!

Hunger Games Updates
As we are now less than a month to the release of "Mockingjay" by Suzanne Collins, Scholastic has unveiled a Facebook page for The Hunger Games Trilogy...you can find the link here. While it is a brand new page, and does not have a lot of information that we don't already know, I imagine it will constantly be updated with news and maybe even interviews?
Right now it has a link to a "Mockingjay" trailer. You can also find the link by visiting "The Hunger Games" trilogy website; click on "Watch the Trailer" at the bottom of the page. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Best giveaway item...EVER!
Obviously, we are awaiting the next book, due out in November...aaaah, it seems so far away! Recently, at the American Library Association conference in Washington, D.C., both kids spent one morning walking through the exhibition floor with me. We had a great time talking with publishers, hearing their suggestions, and scooping up advance copies of books...which is obviously a big highlight of the event for readers like myself. (That, and meeting favorite authors, but that was a previous blog post).
However, the "BEST GIVEAWAY ITEM EVER," as deemed by the entire family were the Diary of a Wimpy Kid water bottles that we scored from Amulet Books/Abrams. And as we are heading out to a soccer tournament, filling our water bottles to put in the cooler, I must agree. I was originally thinking that we would keep one and I'd give away the other two in a drawing at school in the fall. Alas, EJH students, you are out of luck because no one will part with theirs, including ME!
