Hunger Games Movie...

As we countdown to the release of "Mockingjay" (almost T -30 days!), Hunger Games fans like myself are becoming more anxious.  I hope that you have been reading some of my suggestions to tide you over, especially "Incarceron," "Ship Breaker," and "The Maze Runner."  You might even enjoy "The Gardener" and "Epitaph Road."  (see earlier blog posts to find my reviews of those titles).

Since "The Hunger Games" became such a phenomenon, there has been buzz about a Hunger Games movie.  I have had numerous discussions with students about the possibility.  To be honest, I thought that it would never fly because the visual imagery of kids killing kids would be pretty powerful and I wasn't sure how it would get through the movie rating system.  I guess this is why I am not in the movie business.  There does appear to be a Hunger Games movie in the works.  See this article from the LA Times to find out the scoop!  Exciting news.

So, the question is...who do you think should play Katniss???

I don't know whether or not to be excited, since, as a rule, movie adaptations are disappointing! (see: Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
Hopefully, if Suzanne Collins really did help write the screenplay, it will stay a little more true. I've never heard of Chloe Moretz, but both Dakota Fanning and Saorise Ronan are very talented. I'll have to think about it more, however. More importantly, who would play Peeta?

Not an answer to your question, but I also want to recommend Lockdown: Escape from Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith and The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, for your "if you liked The Hunger Games" list.

My two titles and your five are all recent; maybe we should work on a "before The Hunger Games, there was..." to bring attention to some of those earlier dystopian books.

I agree that movie adaptations are often scary. I had many students complain about Percy Jackson and the Olympians, though I have not seen it yet. I think that a Hunger Games movie can go very right or very wrong. And now I am also wondering who should play Peeta? That is an excellent question!

I had a student recommend Lockdown (Smith) in response to the review I posted of Incarceron. I love dystopian books and would love to compile a list of "Before there was Katniss..." titles! Excellent suggestion.

The whole Hunger Games series is the best. For those adults who think it is just for "kids" - get over it. Our entire family loves this series and we are completely excited for Mockingjay. If we weren't out of town on vacation for the bo...ok release, we'd be having one heck of a Reaping Party at our house.

P.S. They need to do an opening casting call like they did for Harry Potter and get someone fresh and new for Katniss.

I am in the movie world. and this would never make a good kids or teen movie. I know some people who are high up in movies and they said it is a no go.
